Description

After their friends from IVS had booked a breeding between their thoroughbred mare Thelma and Volley, the HS staff was happy to hear, that there would be twins seeing the light of the day. And so it was said, that HS would keep one of the foals.
When the birth was close, the staff drove to IVS to see their friends and the foals, once they were born. While Victor was at home to work, Sam, Lennard and Victoria went over there, because it would probably be Victoria, who would race the horse, once it was old enough.
It was already late evening and they sat together with the IVS Staff for a chat, when suddenly one of the stable hands ran into the room to tell them, that the foals were about to come. So all of the people in the room jumped off their seats to see the birth in the stable.
Short before midnight, the two foals were born without trouble. Hugh, as a vet, checked them, with the others watching curiously.

"What is it?", Liz suddenly said, she knew that look on Hugh's face, when he was done checking the smaller twin, the filly. Her fears becoming even more, when she saw the concerned glance Hugh shot them, when standing back up and exiting the stall.
"I'm afraid the filly is blind.", he said. A silent shock twitched through the group.
"What do you mean, blind?", Liz finally asked again.
"Well. Maybe not compleatly blind. She might still see some shadows, but she definitely has a strongly deprived sight. We would have to check her further to be sure just how much she sees.", Hugh explained.

Everybody's gaze wandered back to the stall, where the colt was already on his feet and drinking, while Jack was carefully leading the filly towards her mother's udder. Now they knew it, it really was obvious the foal didn't see much.
"But. What can we do now?", Oli finally spoke up, looking plain dumpfound. It had been such a fun evening, they had already joked about how the twins would one day rock the racetracks and now. What was going to happen now?
Hugh just inhaled a deep, concerned breath,
"Isn't it obvious?", he just said, his gaze wandering to the others, all seemed a little perplex, just Lennard appeared to imidiatly understand and after shooting Victoria a glance, she obviously did, too.

„No, Lennard, no way!“, Victoria said and crossed her arms. „Why would you bring her down, just because she is blind?“
Lennard rolled his eyes. „You're just doing this 'girl-thing' again, Victoria... We don't even know, how this little fella will do on the meadows, if she will ever be able to stay on one of them ALONE or with other horses, she might get bullied or worse...“
Sam stood next to the stall and watched the filly, while Lennard was discussing with Victoria. Neither Thelma nor her brother seeming to really bother about the filly's disability. Thelma kept caringly lick both of her foals as they drank, while Jack stayed beside the filly, who however did not appear to need any more help, now she found where the milk came from and like that, he just watched, while absent-mindly petting Thelma.

„You know“, he started again, „I'm not a fan of killing an animal, I'm even a vegetarian, but – it wouldn't be fair to let her suffer, just because you think she's over cute and deserves a chance...“
"But she does! Look how she's drinking, Lennard. She's not cowering in a corner not able to stand up, she's drinking like every other foal would.", Liz took sides with Victoria, also not wanting to see the filly put down, not now after she stood and drank.
It had been clear, that, if one of the foals was a colt, he would stay with IVS, while HS would take the other foal. They actually had been hoping for a filly. And now they had one, but it had a disability.
"Listen, she's a racehorse. She is born to race. It's like a bird who can't fly or a fish who can't swim. I don't know f it's fair, either.", Oli spoke up, shaking his head a bit.
"And who said she won't race? It's not fair to not give her a chance to try!", Liz huffed.
„Sam! We mustn't bring her down, come one!“, Victoria said, now turning to the readhead, who sighed silently.
„I don't know Victoria... I wish I had the same positive thoughts about her, but she might be suffering, we don't know that...“
„I will care for her! I will spend all my free time in her stall and I will train her, once she's old enough!“, Victoria answered, Tears filled her eyes. She did not want the filly to be brought down. She felt pity for her, but she also could see, that this little filly was a fighter.
„You sound like a 4-years old girl that wants a bunny...“, Lennard looked at her and raised an eyebrow. „Are you sure, that you can imagine, how much work this will be?“, he asked and looked at her.

"Y'know. There once was a throughoutbred called 'Elmer Gantry'. He went blind, because of a disease he had and was brought to a meadow where he just stood around becoming more and more weary. A woman felt sympathetic for him and bought him. She first just worked him with other horses and when he became more sure on his feet, she also rode him and one day, she even taught him how to jump just with trusting in her help all on his own.", Jack suddenly said, meanwhile having started to pet the little filly. His gaze staying with her for a moment, before he looked up with a bit of a smile,
"Hey, I also was told I'd never ride again.", he then just shrugged, "I think she will show you what she wants to make of off her life. It's her decision, not ours."

"That is a point, I think.", Hugh agreed, Liz just beaming at him, while Oli also gave in with somewhat of a nod.
„Yes!“, she answered, sounding determined. „We managed so many things! We raise monsters at Halfmoon Stables, so do you really think, that a blind filly would make such difference?“
„Then keep her...“ Sam turned to Victoria and looked at her. „But she'll be all yours, with all the work to be done, all the training, all the trouble you may have...“
Hugh chuckled, "I would not say she's just Victoria's burden. First of all she will stay with her mother and brother and the other foals and we will try to raise her as normal as we can. Victoria, you can come over whenever you want and stay as long as you want and once those two are old enough for training, I bet we will figure something out, won't we."
"Who knows. We might still rock the racetracks, huh?", Oli added, nudging Victoria in the side playfully.

Well well, here are the two babies of this breeding:

On the left, we have a little colt, which stays with mommy hat *inglorious-vikings and who is not named yet :3
On the right, the blind filly will stay at HS and will be named HS Wild Strawberries, which is a Road Movie, just as you wished, my dear :3

We hope, that these two babies will have a wonderful life, even if Berry, as we call her, is blind and probably will need much more work and faith. We're not sure, if she will ever be able to race somehow, maybe on the private HS track, but not in races. We will try to get her into some dressage maybe, without tack and saddle, like - yeah, horsemanship :)
Still we hope, that her brother will become a woooonderful racehorse at IVS :3

Oh btw, the story is some kind of a collab between us, we wrote it together :D So I hope someone's reading it! xD
